How to write a good personal-effects declaration
Describe what the goods actually are. “10 used cotton shirts, 5 books, 3 pairs used shoes” gives customs far more useful information than “personal belongings”. Values should be realistic and defensible.
Keep restricted goods separate until you know they can travel. If one prohibited item is packed into a large multi-box shipment, it can create problems for the whole consignment.
What changes the cost of personal-effects shipping?
We avoid made-up “from” prices for a multi-box move because the real cost changes materially with the shipment details.
Customs is about the whole shipment, pricing is about every box
For international customs, build one accurate list covering all the goods you are sending. For courier quotation, measure every box, parcel or suitcase separately. Those are two different data sets and both are important.
